A Mixtape About the Meaning of Life
We can think of life in terms of a game. You win some, you lose some. But winning is different for each of us. For some, it may look like amassing wealth. For others, it may be finding success in their careers. Whatever yours may be, the first thing we all need to do is think about the meaning of life so that we can turn our efforts into fulfilling our purpose.
In this solo episode, Tim talks about the people, shows, and books that have inspired him as of late. As he grows older, he finds that he has more questions rather than answers. He dives deep into these questions today, taking us into his mixtape about the meaning of life. He wraps up his reflections with a reminder to allow God to steer us into finding our true assignment and being in a state of peace.

Episode Highlights
[03:32] “One might think… that the more mature we get, the older we get, the more answers that we have. I am finding that I have more questions than answers.” - Click Here to Tweet This
[04:27] The Game of Life
- The Game of Life is a board game that was introduced in the 1960s by Reuben Klemer. Its goal is to accumulate the most money.
- This game reflects what our society thought about the meaning of life.
- In 2007, Hasbro released a new version of the game with slightly different thoughts about the meaning of life.
- Besides earning money in the game, you can also earn points for virtuous deeds.
- Just like the revamping of this game, we should challenge ourselves to keep redefining the meaning of success.
[09:07] Ted Lasso
- Ted Lasso, an Apple TV+ series, is about a football coach with a very positive outlook on life.
- It’s a “feel good” show about the naive enjoyment of life, which also circles back to the discussion about the meaning of life.
- The first season of the show was mostly light and quirky, and it showed the characters’ hurts and difficulties in the second season.
[13:42] Book Recommendations
- Tim recommends two powerful books by Greg McKeown: Essentialism and Effortless.
- Essentialism makes you question what is essential in your life.
- Tim resonates with this concept especially because he lives in an RV and travels a lot.
- On the other hand, Effortless talks about the type of effort we put forth in our day-to-day lives.
- These efforts depend on how we define success. If you equate success with wealth, then you’d spend the most effort on generating money.
[17:33] Exciting Upcoming Episodes
- In his conversation with Joel Comm, Tim noticed that individuals in his age bracket tend to ponder more about the meaning of life.
- For Joel, life should be fun. That got Tim thinking about whether or not he’s living a life filled with joy.
- Meanwhile, in his interview with Simon Severino, they talked about growth.
- One thing that Tim noticed is even though he advocates for growth and profit, he also has an easygoing lifestyle and gets plenty of rest.
[21:24] “I used to be one of these guys that were pretty proud of the fact that I slept very little. I thought it was a badge of honor….You know what, it feels really good to be rested. It feels really good to just have the mind feel rested, the body feel rested.” - Click Here to Tweet This
- This chat with Simon speaks a lot about the importance of having a good rhythm and pace in life. Listen to the full episode to hear more about Tim’s exciting interviews!
[24:24] The Chosen
- The Chosen is a show about the people that Jesus chose to follow him early in his ministry.
- Tim admits that he didn’t want to watch this show because he gets disappointed with the quality of Christian television, but he tried to watch with an open mind.
- For Tim, the show relays the nature of Jesus Christ during the beginning of his ministry, and it did a great job at storytelling.
- Watching the show made him realize that we are His chosen, and He came for us.
- Tim reminds us not to construe the show as 100% Biblical and Scriptural truth.
[29:41] Pondering Spiritual Arguments
- Some people believe that God is sovereign; He is moving us around like chess pieces.
- However, others think that we do have free will.
- Tim agrees with both ideas. There is an Invisible Hand of God steering and guiding us. But there are ways that we could veer off and go in different directions.
[31:01] “I believe that we are chosen. We are created for a specific assignment on this earth, specific assignments. And I believe our mission, our path, the way we need to go is to identify and find what that assignment is.” - Click Here to Tweet This
[32:30] Notes About the Meaning of Life
- Life can take us to different paths. There is no one fixed direction.
[32:30] “Life veers and goes in a lot of different directions. It's not an ABCD; there's a lot of paths.” - Click Here to Tweet This
- The Game of Life and the shows Ted Lasso and The Chosen can be compared to life as we know it.
- There are many things in life we cannot control. So, there is power in surrendering our lives to Him.
[34:34] Moving Towards Peace, Rest, and Sabbath
- Getting closer to the assignment we were created for leads to less stress and anxiety.
- Get close to your Creator so you can understand what that assignment is.
[37:39] "The way most of us live in our first-world culture, it's killing us. Because we're all under stress. We're trying to do something. We're trying to be successful in the way that others think we should be, instead of the assignment that we should have.” - Click Here to Tweet This
- Start thinking about the meaning of life and your purpose now, so you won’t have to feel anxious about it.
- When you’re not under anxiety or stress, the more attractive, healthy, creative, focused, and grateful you become.
