Marketing, Strategy, Faith & Family | Q&A with Evan Knox

With its emphasis on immaterial spirituality, faith might seem incompatible with worldly concepts like marketing. However, a spiritually-blessed life doesn’t have to be one without success and accomplishment. At its core, marketing is a conversion tool to turn people into clients, customers, and followers. All groups, from businesses to religious organizations, can benefit from marketing.

In this episode, Evan Knox shares a marketing model that organizations can use to simplify their brand building. He also draws from his personal experiences to make connections between faith and marketing.

Episode Highlights

[01:58] Evan's Beginnings

  • Evan grew up in Atlanta before traveling to various countries around the world, like Australia, Thailand, and the US.
  • He came up with Caffeine Marketing while reflecting on how entrepreneurs always liked to drink coffee.
  • The entrepreneurial hustle is overrated; people should be working smarter, not harder all the time.
“Most entrepreneurs and business owners just throw money onto the wall hoping something will stick.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[08:01] Caffeine Marketing

  • Caffeine Marketing chooses clients carefully, ensuring that they can build mutually beneficial relationships with the people they want.
  • Instead of providing marketing content, the company focuses on strategies to ensure that clients can grow their businesses down the line.
“The whole hustle thing to me feels a little cliche. Like, I feel like you should work smarter, not harder all the time.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[11:13] Marketing 101

  • Marketing starts with the first phase of brand awareness, where potential customers discover your business.
  • The second phase is consideration, where the business tries to convince people to work with them.
  • The last phase, conversion, results in people becoming customers.

[13:27] StoryBrand

  • StoryBrand is a proprietary seven-part framework that puts businesses in the role of guides, instead of heroes.
  • With this approach, businesses guide their customers to work out their desires and to figure out the obstacles that keep them from what they want.
“Okay, well, this adversity can either crush me, and I can end up where my dad is at right now. Or I'm gonna decide to, you know, I'm gonna lean into the opposite of that, I'm gonna lean into this new faith that I've kind of discovered.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[24:11] Family and Growing Up

  • Evan's father and grandfather both work in the jewelry business. Growing up with them helped Evan develop his marketing skills.
  • He always felt loved by his family, who enjoyed stability and abundance until his father started using drugs.
  • Evan's family lost their home, but he decided to use his newfound faith as a source of strength.
  • His experiences gave him a scarcity mindset, which ultimately drove his desire to uplift his family.

[34:11] Faith and Marketing

  • With a belief in God, we realize that not everything is under your control, so we should do our best with what we can control.
  • Even faithful missions, such as those in the Bible, employ many marketing concepts, as they involve converting people to act by their faith.
  • Faith and marketing are distinct concepts, but they don't necessarily conflict. We can integrate them to achieve our goals.
“I can control some things, but I can't control everything. And I look at that, and I go, you know what, I'm gonna do the very best I can with the things that are in my control. And there is no sense of worrying about the things that are outside my control.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[46:25] Achieving Growth With Marketing

  • Start with assessing your current situation when it comes to brand awareness.
  • Reflect on how you influence your customers to make their lives better. Be a guide that educates, not a hero that solves others' problems for them.
  • Finally, assess your conversion funnels. Make it easy for people to commit to calls-to-action.

[53:19] CaffeineLabs

  • With CaffeineLabs, Evan works with companies to help grow their businesses in ways beyond marketing.
  • Business mastery enables entrepreneurs to find innovative ways to keep on growing.

[59:44] What's Next?

  • Evan is currently working on developing a micro private equity group.
  • His goal is to become financially independent, enabling him to travel and work with nonprofits as much as he wants.

[01:01:13] Seek, Go, Create

  • For Evan, “create” stands out as it has the most internal resistance associated with it.
  • To create means to put pen to paper and to make it happen.
“Truth be told, if you look through the Bible, marketing happens." - Click Here to Tweet This
