  • He also tells people that he helps small and midsize businesses (SMBs) with advertising and marketing through SEO copywriting.
  • Moreover, he informs people that he is a giver. He helps people get better.

[04:46] The Definition of SEO

  • SEO stands for search engine optimization. The goal is for websites to appear on the first page of Google results.
  • John’s job is to get into the mindset of what users have gone through to get to a keyword that fits their search query.
  • SEO helps businesses get in front of their ideal customers and be positioned as leaders.

[07:47] About John’s Parents

  • John is forever grateful for everything his parents have sacrificed and accomplished to get their family from Vietnam to Canada.
  • The move provided him and his siblings with abundant opportunities and choices, as well as the opportunity to give back.
  • His parents pushed John and his siblings to stay grounded. They focused on education and togetherness.
  • John developed the core of his business from this connection his family taught him. Through connection, humans are better, stronger, and more powerful than any individual.
[11:02] “That’s the core of my business as well. We connect because we understand that together we’re way better, stronger, and we’re much more powerful than any individual.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[11:15] His Parents’ Business in Vietnam

  • John’s dad had a parts business for bicycles. By liquidating this, they had enough assets to give to smugglers, so they could leave Vietnam.
  • His parents sacrificed everything they had to migrate. They believed there was more opportunity on the other side.

[13:30] What Motivates John

  • In the early days, it was all about survival. John wanted to fit in and be socialized.
  • Before going to college, John had over 20 different jobs. Through these, he interacted with various people who made him more curious about life.

  • John emphasizes the necessity of hard work, education, and gratitude.

[22:35] Facing Discrimination

  • It may not be obvious, but there is a lot of hate toward people who look different.
  • John just lets it go and always looks for ways to empower himself.
  • Always look at what you have and be grateful for it. Do not judge others because everyone’s going through different circumstances.
[23:58] “We’re all together on this Earth and planet, trying to just live, and survive, and have a happy, joyous lifespan, and have good ties together. Right? Why judge others? Everyone goes through different situations.” - Click Here to Tweet This
  • Broaden your horizons and explore things beyond your comfort zone.

[26:59] Experiencing Life Outside Toronto

  • John grew up in a smaller town an hour away from Toronto. It had a large population, but it only had a dozen other Asians in it.
  • Growing up in a situation where food and survival are more important than what people say, the negativity doesn’t impact John.

[29:05] John’s Path to SEO Copywriting

  • John’s history included advertising sales for 10 years. He worked in traditional advertising and dabbled in online performance-based advertising.
  • In traditional advertising, he learned how to connect with business owners and provide value based on the brand and product he was selling.
  • With the advent of the information age, email and websites became more accessible. You had to adapt to change.
  • He got into this entrepreneurial business of SEO copywriting to fill the gap between the needs of the customers.

[32:51] The Yellow Pages and SEO Technology

  • Understanding the algorithm of Google is more challenging than the Yellow Pages.
  • The biggest ads get the first placement and alphabetical categories.
  • Back then, if you weren’t in the Yellow Pages, you’d miss out on a whole year of the best type of marketing.
  • Nowadays, if you’re not on Google, you’re missing out on visibility and other opportunities.

[36:16] The Importance of SEO for Businesses

  • Search engines make it easier for potential buyers and prospects who are actively seeking products or services you offer.
  • As a business owner, you need to show up to people seeking out your products and services.
  • SEO is about understanding what you offer.
  • Position yourself as a leader so that you can be served up more frequently with as many keywords applicable to you.

[40:52] Can We Trust Google with Our Information?

  • Your banks and email are tools that make your life easier. It makes sense that you’re giving up something like data.
  • These big companies' main revenue source is your data and analytics.
  • A lot of businesses forget how important it is to have this digital presence. Your website should be your number one digital asset today.

[45:33] Common Mistakes and Bad Practices

  • You pay for what you get in life, not just in business.
  • There is no guarantee of success in any business. Even the largest companies like Facebook and Google do not guarantee results.
  • John’s business analyzes everything from competitors to Google’s guidelines to help their clients overtake their competition the right way.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Do not get duped.
  • Always do your vetting. Look at the gaps in information with any deals.

[49:16] Basic Understanding of Algorithms

  • First, look at user behavior.
  • By the time your consumers check out your website, they know everything about you. They have done their research.
  • What business owners don’t understand is that SEO is behind the scenes of what goes on.
  • SEO copywriting is all about positioning yourself as a leader in the eyes of Google and the users.
  • It is about generating more opportunities, lifting traffic, and finding gaps in how people can find you.

[53:28] When to Expect Results

  • Know your scope. It all depends on perspective and where you’re at.
  • Ask yourself what you want to be known for in your industry.
  • Understand your customers and focus on creating content, so you can position yourself as a thought leader for your ideal customers.
  • Listen to the full episode to hear more advice from John!

[56:15] The Content You Need to Post

  • A proper website is the biggest asset piece digitally. It's the core foundation of a business.
  • Everything on your website should speak to the type of clients you want to attract. Answer their problems with a solution you can deliver.

  • Ask yourself, “Who are my 10 best customers in the lifetime of my business?” Then, go out there and get to know them.
  • Afterward, amplify your presence on social media, send links, attend webinars, and be frequent. Google only wants businesses that are leaders in their space.
  • Understand that this process takes time.

[59:40] The Speed Factor

  • Users don't want a site that takes three seconds or longer to load.
  • Building on themes and using many plugins slows down the site.
  • A custom website is ideal. But you have to pay for that better user experience.

[01:01:40] How to Monitor How Your Business is Doing

  • It all depends on where you’re at, how frequent your competitors are, and how much your customers want. Furnish your content piece.
  • The relationship you build with people is what you need to amplify. Do good work for people, and let them amplify it.

[01:05:21] John’s Ideal Client and How to Engage

  • John’s ideal client is someone that understands how to run a business. He also likes dealing with service-based SMBs struggling with the digital landscape and SEO.
  • The typical engagement starts with taking a look at your website and what Local SEO Search Inc. can do. They audit your website, then build a roadmap for you.
  • John nurtures long-term relationships with his clients.

[01:10:44] What Do Successful Businesses Do?

  • Good leaders know they can't do anything by themselves. They build strong relationships of trust.
[01:10:59] “What I found is that leaders, true leaders, entrepreneurs, people, understand how to live fulfillment with happiness and joy. They’re very decisive. They understand that they can’t do everything themselves.” - Click Here to Tweet This
  • John’s priority is working with honest people that make a difference and give to the community.
  • SMBs were hit the hardest in the pandemic. They're not funded by lobbyists, yet they show up every day and work to survive. John wants to support these people.

[01:14:38] Seek, Go, or Create?

  • John has always been a ‘Go’ kind of person. Success or failure, at least you’re taking action.
  • He might not always be successful, but it's important that he gives it his all. By going, he doesn’t live with regret.
