Episode Highlights

[04:58] Getting to Know Ryan

  • Ryan grew up in a Christian family.
  • Ever since he was young, he was already wired for performance and excellence.
  • Ryan served the military as a naval officer and a Navy helicopter pilot.
  • His genetics and environment led him to become performance-oriented throughout school, work, and even his business.

[11:15] Ryan’s Spiritual Life

  • Ryan accepted Jesus into his life when he was eight years old.
  • He struggled growing up in a very liberal city, where most of his friends were not Christians.
  • When he was in college, he started to drift off from his spiritual life.
  • He realized that the problem with being performance-oriented is that you burn out fast.

[13:59] The Wake-Up Call

  • During flight school, Ryan studied and worked hard. He had earned everything up until that point in his life, but he felt empty.
  • He was in a cycle of just doing the minimum, and he completely strayed from God.
  • A month before his first deployment, Ryan crashed a helicopter.
  • His bad decisions allowed him to experience the protection of God.
  • Upon realizing that he was spiritually dead, Ryan rededicated his life to the Lord.

[25:11] On Successes and Failures

  • Success means being faithful to do what God tells him to do.
  • It means committing to the process and leaving the outcome to God.
  • The lower we go, the higher we actually go. Success means stepping back to step up.
  • He uses our failures or setbacks to prepare us for a better outcome.

[29:27] God, The “Ultimate Judo Master”

  • God is not the cause of our failures. He did not put those things on us.
  • Instead, He is the ultimate master of orchestrating these things and turning them into something useful.
  • God is actively involved in our personal affairs, but we have total autonomy over our decisions.
  • He uses everything for good.

[34:40] A Better Way to Success*

  • When you are a high performer, you want to get things done.
  • We are made in the image of God. Human beings can accomplish many things, even apart from Him.
  • However, there is a better way where we have the option to cooperate with God.
  • Ryan’s experiences made him realize he made a mess of his own life. He decided to give more control to God.

[36:09] Less Stress, More Rest

  • Resting requires more intentionality and straining than hard work. Our natural inclination is to over function and control everything.
  • After a snowboarding accident, Ryan was compelled to take a rest. God told him that the most productive thing he could do is to spend time with Him.
  • Ryan sat still, prayed, and read the Word of God. God took care of the outcome.
  • Perfection is an ongoing process of conformance to the image of God.
“There's a better way where we have the option to co-labor or cooperate with Someone who has infinite power, infinite knowledge and is ever-present, and also, most importantly, infinitely loving and gracious. A whole new world opens up to you.” - Click Here to Tweet This

  • The purpose of the book is to help people see God’s goodness more practically.
  • It emphasizes the manifestation of God’s grace in their personal lives and businesses.
  • The book talks about rest. It uses Ryan’s life stories and other peoples’ testimonies.
  • It aims to bring spiritual truths to life in ways that people can relate to and understand.

[47:42] Seek, Go, Create

  • Ryan has been seeking, going, and coming for a long time. Right now, he wants to create.
  • God has given him a lot of talents and gifts. His purpose is to create inspirational content.
“Perfection, I think, in the world's words, is a static point. It's an endpoint, whereas perfection in the kingdom of God is an ongoing process of conformance to the image of Christ. It's an ongoing performance of on God's part with us, where we are becoming better versions of ourselves.” - Click Here to Tweet This
